The low-e pane

Pilkington K Glass™ and Low-E Technology

Pilkington K Glass™ is a low-emissivity (low-e) coated glass, commonly used as the inner pane of an energy-efficient sealed unit.

What “low-e” means
Emissivity is how readily a surface gives off heat. A low-e coating is a poor radiator of heat, so less warmth escapes through the glass.

An extremely thin, invisible coating
It’s applied during glass manufacture, so it’s hard-wearing — and you won’t see it.

Still lets the daylight in
Daylight and useful solar energy still pass through. Some Pilkington low-e solutions are designed to make the most of this free “passive solar gain”.

Glass Replacement FAQs

Can you replace just the glass and keep my existing frames?

Yes, where the frames are suitable. We check their condition during your free survey and will tell you honestly whether they can be kept.

How do I know if my sealed units have failed?

The most common sign is condensation or a cloudy haze between the two panes that can’t be wiped away. It usually means the seal around the edge of the unit has broken down.

What is Pilkington energiKare™?

It’s Pilkington’s range of energy-efficient sealed glass units for homes. The units we install combine a low-e Pilkington K Glass™ inner pane with a Pilkington Optiwhite™ outer pane, warm-edge spacer bars and an argon gas filling.

Will low-e glass make my rooms darker?

No. The low-e coating is invisible and is designed to let daylight through, while reflecting room heat back inside.

Why might new glass mist up on the outside?

On cold, clear mornings, condensation can occasionally form on the outside of energy-efficient glass. Pilkington explains this happens because less heat escapes through the glass, so the outer pane stays cooler — a sign the glazing is insulating well.

Is replacing the glass messy or disruptive?

Replacing sealed units is usually much less disruptive than replacing complete windows, because the frames stay in place. Our team always leaves your home clean and tidy.

Is the survey free?

What if my frames aren’t suitable to keep?
